About this template
This couples budget spreadsheet is for two people with two incomes and one set of bills. It works out a fair way to share the costs, either half each or in proportion to what each of you earns, and tells you who owes whom at the end of the month.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
The dashboard
Pick the full year or one month and every card and panel follows. Nothing on the page is typed; it fills itself from your transactions.
- The settle-up in one line: who owes whom, and how much
- Two incomes: what came in and each partner's share of it
- Settling up month by month: each balance and what is still owed after you settle
- What each of you paid toward shared costs, against what your fair share was
- Half each or by income: what each way of splitting takes from each income
- The six biggest shared categories, so you see where the joint money goes
- The two of you side by side: income, fair share, paid and personal spending
- Personal spending with one bar for each of you
- Every savings goal you share and how far along it is
Who Pays What
The Who Pays What tab is the heart of this household budget. It splits every shared bill in proportion to what each of you earns, or straight down the middle. One dropdown decides which, and the whole file follows. It handles the shared expenses so neither of you has to keep a running tally in your head.
Twenty-nine connected tabs
Everything reads from one transaction list, so nothing is typed twice and there are no pivot tables to refresh. It is a two income budget and a budget spreadsheet for the whole year in one file.
- 2,000 transaction rows and 40 categories, all renameable
- Budgets, variances, totals and percentages calculated for you
- Over-budget and overdue amounts change color on their own, which makes it a handy bill tracker
- Dropdown lists that grow as you add accounts and categories
- Charts that redraw from your own numbers, not pictures
A filled-in copy to learn from

Frequently asked questions
Does it work in Excel or Google Sheets?
Both. The Excel workbook runs in Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions for a free Google account.
Can we split bills by income instead of 50/50?
Yes. The Who Pays What tab splits every shared bill in proportion to what each of you earns, or evenly. One dropdown switches between the two.
How do we know who owes whom?
The dashboard shows the settle-up in one line, who owes whom and how much, plus each month's balance and what is still owed after you settle.
Can we keep personal spending separate?
Yes. Personal categories are tracked apart from shared costs, and the dashboard shows each partner's personal spending as its own bar.
Does it connect to our bank?
No. You enter each transaction once and every tab recalculates. There is no bank connection, no add-in and no subscription.
