About this template
This family budget spreadsheet is made for running a household, not just one person's money. You log each purchase and paycheck once, and every tab recalculates, from the yearly totals down to what each family member costs and how the children's costs move month to month.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
The dashboard
Choose the full year or a single month and the whole page redraws. You never type on the dashboard; it reads what you have entered elsewhere.
- Five live KPIs: money in, money out, saved, left over and savings rate, each with an up or down arrow against last month
- A twelve-month mini chart on every card, with your chosen month highlighted
- Cash flow: income against spending each month, with a running total of what is left
- Family costs by month, stacked: childcare, school, groceries, clothing, pets and fun
- Spent, budget left and anything over budget for every group, so overspending stands out
- Who it goes on: the amount allocated to each person, taken from the Family Members tab
- Your five biggest categories, largest first
- How close each savings goal is, at a glance
- Net worth, what you own less what you owe, month by month
Built around the family
The Family Members tab is what sets this one apart. It allocates spending to each person in the house and follows the family categories, childcare, school, groceries, clothing and pets, month by month. You see not only what the household spent but who it was spent on.
Twenty-nine connected tabs
Every tab reads from a single transaction list, so nothing is typed twice and there are no pivot tables to refresh. It works as an annual budget and a monthly budget at once, and as an everyday expense tracker.
- 2,000 transaction rows and 40 categories, all of which you can rename
- Budgets, variances, totals and percentages are all calculated for you
- Over-budget and overdue amounts change color on their own
- Dropdown lists grow as you add accounts and categories
- Charts redraw from your own numbers, and a savings tracker follows each goal
Filled in, light and dark
You get a filled-in copy with a full demo year to click through, and a blank copy for your own money. Both come in a light edition and a dark edition, with every tab restyled, not only the dashboard. The formulas are the same in both, so pick the look you prefer.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use it in Google Sheets as well as Excel?
Yes. The Excel workbooks run in Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions, which only need a free Google account.
Can I see what each child or family member costs?
Yes. The Family Members tab allocates spending to each person, and the dashboard shows the amount that goes on each of them.
Can I change the categories to suit my family?
Yes. There are 40 categories and every one can be renamed. The dropdown lists grow as you add accounts and categories.
Does it link to our bank accounts?
No. You log each transaction once and the workbook does the rest. There is no bank connection, no add-in and no subscription.
What is the difference between the light and dark editions?
Only the look. Both have the same tabs and formulas, and both are in every download, filled and blank.
