About this template

This home inventory is built for the day you have to make an insurance claim. It is for homeowners and renters who want a record that answers what an insurer asks: what the item was, what it is worth today, and whether you can prove you owned it.

Room by room, two hundred items

The Contents tab holds 200 items across twelve rooms. For each one you record:

• What it is and the year you bought it
• What it would cost to replace now, rather than what you paid
• The serial or model number
• Whether you still have the receipt, as a simple yes or no

Age is calculated from the year bought, because how old something is comes up with a loss adjuster and few people remember.

The gaps that cost a claim

Most household inventory templates are tidying lists with a value column. This one counts what matters for contents insurance.

• Any item worth over 1,000 with no proof of purchase is flagged red and counted at the top, so you know which receipts to find first
• Proof as a percentage: how much of your home contents you could actually evidence
• The total value of everything you have listed

Totals for every room

Items and value are totaled for each of the twelve rooms, so a question about the garage or the spare bedroom has a straight answer. Working room by room also makes the list easier to build in short sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Excel, or can I use Google Sheets?

Either. The download has Excel files for Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to copy the Google Sheets versions with a free Google account.

Should I enter what I paid or what it is worth now?

The value column is for what it would cost to replace the item now. The year you bought it is recorded separately, and the age is calculated from it.

How does it show which items I cannot prove?

Each item has a receipt yes/no column. Anything over 1,000 with no proof of purchase is flagged red and counted at the top, and proof is also shown as a percentage of everything listed.

How many items and rooms does it cover?

Up to 200 items across twelve rooms, with items and value totaled for each room.

Can I use it for business as well as at home?

Yes. The files are licensed for personal and business use on your own devices.
