About this template

This retirement budget treats income as the fixed part and asks the real question: how long does the rest last? It is a retiree budget for anyone living on pensions and savings who wants the drawdown worked out properly.

Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).

Guaranteed and variable income

Every income source is listed as guaranteed or variable, so the share that cannot be taken away is a number on the dashboard, 76% in the demo. That makes it a simple pension tracker as well as a fixed income budget.

The drawdown

Enter the portfolio balance and what you take out each year, and the withdrawal rate falls out of the two. The file then shows how many years the pot lasts at the growth rate you assume. That figure uses the annuity formula, not balance divided by withdrawal: a pot that keeps growing while it is drawn lasts noticeably longer, and the straight-line answer can be out by a decade.

  • Retirement Income: every source, guaranteed or variable, with its share
  • Withdrawal rate and years remaining, against a growth rate you set
  • Income against essentials and everything else, month by month

25 connected tabs

Around the drawdown planner sits a full monthly budget. Everything reads from one transaction list, so nothing is typed twice and there are no pivot tables to refresh.

  • 2,000 transactions and 40 categories, all renameable
  • Every figure calculated: budgets, variances, totals and percentages
  • Over-budget and overdue amounts color themselves
  • Drop-down lists that grow as you add accounts and categories
  • Charts that redraw from your own numbers, not pictures

You get a filled-in copy as well as a blank one: a full demo year you can click through, and a blank ready for your own money, in Excel and Google Sheets. It uses no dynamic arrays, no macros and no add-ins, so it behaves the same in every supported version, and the Google Sheets version is a real workbook, not a PDF with a link in it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it in Excel or Google Sheets?

Both. You get Excel files for Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to make Google Sheets copies with a free Google account.

How does it work out how long my savings last?

It uses the annuity formula with your balance, yearly withdrawal and the growth rate you assume, rather than simply dividing balance by withdrawal.

What growth rate does it use?

The one you set. It does not choose a rate or give advice about one.

Can I separate pensions from investment income?

Yes. Each income source is marked guaranteed or variable, and the dashboard shows the guaranteed share.

Does it connect to my bank or pension provider?

No. There is no bank connection, no add-ins and no macros. You enter your own figures.
