About this template
This roommate bill split tracker is for shared houses and apartments where one person usually pays the rent and everyone else settles up later. Add the bills once, choose how each one is split, and the workbook shows every share and exactly who owes whom.
Splitting the internet equally makes sense. Splitting the rent equally when one room is twice the size often does not. This file lets each bill follow its own rule.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
The dashboard
Nothing on the dashboard is typed. Pick everyone or one person and their share lights up everywhere.
- Bills a month: the household's bills, or one person's share of them
- Every bill, split: each bill divided between roommates the way it should be
- Settling up: share, paid in, owes and is owed, for every person
- Bills against income: how much of each person's income goes on the house
- Three ways to split: what equal, by income and by room would mean for each person
- Who pays what: each person's share of the month as a ring
- The biggest bills: the six largest, with the chosen person's part highlighted
What sets it apart
- Three ways to split, chosen per bill: equal, by income or by room, from a dropdown on each bill
- Shares that move together: change one bill from equal to by room and every share recalculates, so the discussion is about the method rather than anyone's number
- A settle-up that says who owes whom: each share against what was actually paid, with owes and is-owed in separate columns
- What has not gone out yet this month, on its own line
Still a full budget underneath
Twelve connected tabs: Start Here, Setup, Accounts, Income, Recurring, The Split, Transactions, Bill Calendar, twelve monthly tabs, Annual Summary, Expense Breakdown and Dashboard. It takes up to six roommates with their income and room size, and 16 shared bills, each split its own way, with what each person pays in total on the summary strip. The worked example is four people on eleven shared expenses, with the rent split by room, groceries by income and the rest equal, and one person owed for covering the rent. It works for a student house, a flatshare or any shared house where you need to split bills fairly.
Light and dark editions
Every download includes a light edition and a dark edition. Every tab is restyled, not just the dashboard, and both use the same formulas. Each comes filled with a worked example and blank, in Excel and in Google Sheets, so the whole house can use the rent split in the version they like.

Yes. You download Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to make your own copy in Google Sheets with a free Google account.
Can different bills be split in different ways?
Yes. Every bill has a dropdown for equal, by income or by room, and every share recalculates when you change it.
How many roommates and bills does it handle?
Up to six roommates, each with their income and room size, and 16 shared bills.
How does it show who owes whom?
The settle-up compares each person's share with what they actually paid, with owes and is-owed in separate columns.
