About this template
This utility bill tracker is for households that want to see what they actually use, not only what they are charged. You type each meter reading, and the workbook works out the usage between that reading and the last one from the same meter.
A single reading tells you very little. The useful number is the difference between two of them, and that is what this file is built around.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
What the readings tab does
- Usage between readings: each reading is matched to the previous one from the same meter and subtracted, using formulas that open in Excel 2016 and in Google Sheets
- Unit rate and standing charge per reading: when the price changes mid-year, older rows still show what you were paying at the time
- Electricity and gas split: two meters on one list, totaled separately, because they move in opposite directions over a year
- The bill and the date you paid it on every row
- Room for 300 readings across five fuel types
A countdown to the end of your fixed rate
Put your tariff end date on Setup and the summary strip counts down the days, turning amber inside sixty days. A fixed deal rolling onto the standard rate is one of the most expensive things that can happen to household energy bills, so this fixed rate reminder is there to give you time to compare and switch.
Six connected tabs
- Start Here and Setup: a guided start, your meters and your tariff end date
- Readings: the meter reading log, with usage worked out
- Bills: the household bills beyond the meters
- Tasks: switching, submitting a reading or chasing a credit
- Dashboard: reads every tab, including electricity usage and gas over time
Two years filled in
The worked example holds 48 monthly readings from an electricity meter and a gas meter over two years, with the unit rate and standing charge on every row, the totals split by fuel, and a fixed tariff that ends in 55 days. A blank copy is ready for your own home.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Excel, or can I use Google Sheets?
Either. You download Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to make your own copy in Google Sheets with a free Google account.
Can I track electricity and gas together?
Yes. Both meters go on one list, each reading is matched to the last one from the same meter, and the totals are kept separately.
What happens when my unit rate changes?
The unit rate and standing charge are recorded on each reading, so older rows keep the price you paid at the time.
How does the tariff reminder work?
You enter the date your fixed tariff ends. The strip counts down the days and turns amber inside sixty days.
How many readings does it hold?
The Readings tab has room for 300 readings across five fuel types.
