About this template

This crypto cost basis tracker is for people who buy, sell and move coins and want a clear record of what each sell cost them. Log one row per trade or transfer, and every sell gets its cost basis worked out two ways, first in first out and average cost, with the gain beside each.

The dashboard

Choose all coins or any single coin, and the whole page follows. It fills itself from your trades.

• What your coins are worth at the prices you typed, against their cost
• Money spent buying and received selling, month by month
• What each coin cost you and what it is worth now, with average buy price against the price now
• The cost of the coins still held, month by month
• Every fee you logged, and its share of what you traded
• The value held on each exchange and in each wallet
• Realized gain each year counted both ways, and your latest sells with proceeds and gain

Cost basis, two ways

Each row holds the date, the amount, the price in dollars and the fee. Every sell is costed first in, first out and at average cost, so you can see the crypto gains under each method side by side. Rows out of date order are flagged.

Every coin

The Cost Basis tab shows what you bought and sold of each coin, your average buy price, what you hold, what it is worth at your price and the unrealized gain so far. It works as a bitcoin tracker and covers every other coin in your crypto portfolio too.

Every exchange and wallet

Transfers move coins between exchanges and wallets without touching cost, and the Exchanges tab shows how much sits where.

Nothing connected

No API keys and no logins: the file never connects to an exchange, and you type the price when you look. It is a crypto spreadsheet for your own records and a tidy crypto tax log to work from, not tax or investment advice.

Light and dark editions

Every download includes a light edition and a dark edition. Every tab is restyled, not only the dashboard, and both run on the same formulas, so you simply pick the look you prefer. Each edition comes filled with a worked example and as a blank copy, in Excel and in Google Sheets.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work in Google Sheets?

Yes. The download includes Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to copy the Google Sheets versions with a free Google account.

Does it connect to my exchange or wallet?

No. There are no API keys and no logins. You enter each trade and type the price when you look.

Which cost basis methods does it use?

Two: first in, first out and average cost. Every sell shows its cost basis and gain under both, side by side.

Do transfers between wallets count as sells?

What is the difference between the light and dark editions?
