About this template
This investment tracker builds every holding from your trades, so the units you own are summed, never typed. It is a portfolio tracker for investors who want a record they own outright, not a dashboard that needs a login.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
The dashboard
Nothing on the dashboard is typed. You can show all accounts or pick one, and the whole page follows.
- Value now: what your holdings are worth at the prices you entered, and what they cost
- Worth against put in, at every month end
- Money in and out: each month's buys, and the sells that took money out
- By account, such as an ISA or pension, largest first
- By asset class: funds, shares, bonds and crypto, with the value of each
- Gain by holding, split into gain already taken and gain not yet taken
- Dividends each month against the same month a year before
- Top holdings with share, gain and return, and the latest sells costed at the average price
Eight connected tabs
Because each holding's unit count comes out of the transaction log, the portfolio table and your trades cannot drift apart, and there is nothing to reconcile.
- Holdings: 60 rows, with units summed from your trades
- Transactions: 500 rows, the only place units are entered
- Dividends: kept separate, so yield is not confused with growth
- Value: a monthly snapshot, which is what the chart reads
- Projection: year by year on your own growth rate, with the pot you need from your own withdrawal rate
- Dashboard, Setup and Start Here
Cost, value, gain and return are worked out per holding, and yield on cost comes from the dividend tracker tab. It works as a stock tracker for single shares and just as well for an index fund, and the value history gives you the investment side of your net worth.
No price feed, on purpose
There is no live price feed and no internet connection. You type current prices yourself, which is why the file keeps working offline, years from now, without anyone's API.
Not financial advice
This is a record of what you bought and a projection of numbers you chose. It does not recommend anything, does not know your circumstances, and assumes a growth rate you type in yourself. Past returns do not predict future ones. For advice, ask someone regulated to give it.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work in Excel and Google Sheets?
Yes. You download Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions (filled and blank).
Does it update share prices automatically?
No. There is no live price feed. You enter current prices yourself, and every value, gain and chart recalculates from them.
How do I record how many units I own?
You do not type units on Holdings. Every buy and sell goes on the Transactions tab, and the units are summed from there.
Can I track dividends separately?
Yes. Dividends have their own tab, so yield on cost is kept apart from growth, and the dashboard compares each month with the same month a year before.
Can I see one account at a time?
Yes. The dashboard has an account picker: choose all accounts or one, and the whole page follows.
