About this template

This options trading journal is for traders who want an honest record of how each strategy has gone. Log one row per trade, close it when it ends, and the file works out the P/L, days held, return on premium and result, then compares your strategies side by side.

Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).

The dashboard

Choose all strategies or any one of them, and the whole page follows. Every number comes from your entries.

  • Net P/L on your closed trades
  • P/L month by month, with the running total over the year
  • Which strategies made money and which lost it, and the win rate for each
  • Every open trade, nearest expiry first, with the days left and how many expire within your warning days
  • How trades ended: closed, expired, assigned or rolled
  • Wins and losses by how long the trade stayed open
  • The latest closed trades, with how they ended and their P/L

Every trade worked out

Each row of the trade log holds the open date, ticker, strategy, call or put, sold or bought to open, strike, expiry, contracts and premium. It handles calls, puts and spreads. Close a trade and its P/L after fees, days held, return on premium and result are filled in. An expired trade closes at zero.

Every strategy side by side

The Strategies tab shows trades, win rate, net P/L, average win and loss, days held, best and worst for each strategy you trade, using your own strategy names, from covered calls to spreads.

Open trades watched, month by month

Every open trade shows its days to expiry and is marked once it is inside the number of days you set. The Months tab counts trades opened and closed, win rate, P/L and running P/L for the last twelve months. It is an options tracker and trading journal for your own records, not trading advice.

Light and dark editions

Every download includes a light edition and a dark edition. Every tab is restyled, not only the dashboard, and both run on the same formulas, so you simply pick the look you prefer. Each edition comes filled with a worked example and as a blank copy, in Excel and in Google Sheets.

Works with

  • Microsoft Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365, on Windows and Mac, and LibreOffice
  • Google Sheets with a free Google account. The Google Sheets version is a real workbook you take a copy of, not a PDF with a link in it.
  • No dynamic arrays, no macros, no add-ins and no subscription

What you download

  • Light edition: the Excel workbook filled with a worked example (a year of option trades across seven strategies), and a blank one
  • Dark edition: the same two files in the dark design
  • The instruction guide, which has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions (light and dark, filled and blank)
  • The terms of use as a PDF

Your files are ready to download as soon as payment clears. They are for personal and business use on your own devices, so please do not share or resell them. Questions before or after you buy? Use our contact page and we will help.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Excel, or can I use Google Sheets?

Either. You get Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to copy the Google Sheets versions with a free Google account.

Does it connect to my broker?

No. You type each trade and how it closed, and the file works out the results from your entries.

Can I use my own strategy names?

Yes. Strategies are your own names, and each one gets its trades, win rate, net P/L, average win and loss, days held, best and worst.

How does it handle a trade that expires?

Mark it expired and it closes at zero, with the P/L and result worked out. Trades can also end closed, assigned or rolled.

What is the difference between the light and dark editions?

Only the look. Every tab is restyled with the same formulas, and both editions come with every download.
