About this template
This wardrobe inventory works out what each piece of clothing really costs you every time you wear it. It is for anyone building a capsule wardrobe or clearing out a closet who would rather decide from numbers than from a feeling about the coat at the back of the rail.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
Two tabs do the work
Items holds what you own and the Wear Log holds what you wore. The wear log is four columns and takes about fifteen seconds a day. Everything else is arithmetic on those two tabs.
- Items: room for 400 pieces, with category, color, brand, season and price
- Times worn, last worn and cost per wear: three columns you never fill in
Cost per wear on everything
Cost per wear is calculated on every item, then ranked twice against a line you set: the ten most expensive per wear and the ten best value. It is worked out by category too, which shows how you really dress. An expensive coat can turn out to cost far more per wear than you thought, and a plain tee far less.
Owned against worn
The Gaps tab sets each category's share of your wardrobe beside its share of your wearing. In the demo, knitwear makes up 9.5% of what is owned but only 2.7% of what is worn, exactly the mismatch a capsule wardrobe is meant to prevent.
- Never worn, listed by name with the date bought and the full price, because that is what it has cost so far
- Anything not worn in ninety days is flagged
- Outfits that already work, counted by the days they actually appear in the log
- Monthly: wears, days dressed, what you bought and what it cost
- A wishlist with the total against what is left in your clothes budget
Ten connected tabs
Start Here, Setup, Items, Wear Log, Cost Per Wear, Outfits, Gaps, Wishlist, Monthly and Dashboard. It works as a closet inventory, outfit tracker and clothing tracker in one file. There are no photographs and no style advice: it divides two numbers correctly and shows you the answer, and what that means is yours to decide.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work in Excel or Google Sheets?
Both. The Excel files run on Excel 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions for a free Google account.
How much do I have to log each day?
The Wear Log is four columns and takes about fifteen seconds a day. Times worn, last worn and cost per wear are calculated for you.
How is cost per wear worked out?
It divides each item's price by the number of times you have worn it. Items never worn show their full price.
Can it help me declutter?
It lists items you have never worn by name and flags anything not worn in ninety days, so you can decide what to keep.
Can I add photos of my clothes?
No. It has no photographs and no style advice. It tracks what you own and wear and does the arithmetic.
