About this template

This habit tracker and goal planner turns big goals into dated steps and scores your habits against the targets you set. It is for anyone who has written the same goal down every January and wants a plan with milestones instead of a wish.

Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).

The dashboard

Nothing on the dashboard is typed. It fills itself from your habits, goals and tasks.

  • Completion: the share of habit days done this month
  • Current streak: the longest run still going, and which habit holds it
  • Daily completion as a bar for every day of the month, with the latest one highlighted
  • A heat grid with habits down the side and days across, every tick in one picture
  • Completion by habit: days done this month for each one
  • A habit picker: choose all habits or just one, and the cards, the day chart and the grid follow
  • Milestones done out of all roadmap steps, and a weekly trend against an 80% aim
  • The goal roadmap with milestones done and still to do, plus the next steps by date with late ones flagged

Goals broken into milestones

The goal setting side works like a roadmap. The example has nineteen milestones across six goals, and each one has a week number that turns into a date, a status and a next action. Anything past its date and not finished turns red and is counted on the summary strip, so nothing gets buried in a list. The next date for each goal is calculated for you. As a milestone tracker, it shows the steps between where you are and where you want to be.

Habits scored against your own targets

The habit grid deliberately has no streak column. A counter that resets to zero the first time you are ill only punishes you for being ill. Instead you get a month of ticks, a target for each habit and a hit rate measured against that target, so a five-days-a-week habit is judged against five, not seven.

  • 16 habits, each with its own target and hit rate
  • 250 tasks, ranked by what is due and what is quick
  • Every total, percentage and date calculated for you
  • Charts that redraw from your own numbers, not static pictures

Light and dark editions

Every download includes a light edition and a dark mode template edition. Every tab is restyled, not only the dashboard, and both use the same formulas. Each comes filled with a worked example and as a blank copy, in Excel and in Google Sheets. The eight connected tabs each read from one list, so nothing is typed twice or copied between tabs.

Works with

  • Microsoft Excel 2016 or later, on Windows or Mac
  • Google Sheets with a free Google account. The Google Sheets version is a real workbook, not a PDF with a link in it.
  • No dynamic arrays, no macros and no add-ins, so this habit spreadsheet behaves the same on Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365 and in LibreOffice
  • No subscription

What you download

  • Light edition: the Excel workbook filled with a worked example, and a blank one
  • Dark edition: the same two files in the dark design
  • The instruction guide, with one-click links to the Google Sheets versions (light and dark, filled and blank)
  • The terms of use as a PDF

Frequently asked questions

Does it work in Excel or Google Sheets?

Both. The download has Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions for a free Google account.

What happens if I miss a day?

Nothing resets. Each habit is scored as a hit rate against your own target for the month, so a missed day lowers the rate a little instead of wiping out your progress.

How are goals broken down?

Each goal gets milestones with a week number that becomes a date, a status and a next action. Late milestones turn red and are counted on the summary strip.

How many habits can I track?

The habit grid holds 16 habits, each with its own target, and the Tasks tab holds 250 tasks.

What is the difference between the light and dark editions?

Only the look. Both have the same tabs and formulas, and both are included in every download.
