About this template
This step tracker is for anyone with a step count on their wrist or phone who wants to see the whole year, not just today. Copy three numbers a day into the log, and the workbook colors every day against your goal, counts your streaks and shows when you really walk.
A watch is good at telling you about today. This file shows the pattern: the longest streak you managed, your best months and the quiet day of the week.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
The dashboard
Nothing on the dashboard is typed. Pick Whole year or any month and the whole page follows.
- Average steps: steps a day against your goal, with your best day
- Every day of the year: a calendar of every day, colored against your daily goal
- Day by day: the month picked, or the last 31 days, against the goal line
- The biggest days: your five biggest days, with the note you left
- Goal days and average for each month, and how the days went: on goal, close, short or never logged
- Distance: distance walked each month, a daily average, and the running total for the year
- Active minutes a day, month by month, against your goal
What sets it apart
- A year on one screen: the Step Calendar is twelve months by thirty-one days, green on goal, amber within a quarter of it, red further off, and gray for days a month does not have
- The streak, counted: a run of goal days is counted as you log, and missing a day or missing logging it starts it again. Your current and longest streak both sit on the dashboard
- Weeks and months: every week from Monday with average steps, goal days, active minutes, distance and the change on the week before, and every month with days logged, average, goal days, hit rate, best day and longest run
- When you walk: average steps by day of the week, charted
Six connected tabs
Start Here, Setup, Activity Log, Step Calendar, Weekly and Dashboard. It works with any watch, phone or pedometer, because you copy three numbers a day into the walking log: steps, active minutes and distance. Set your own goal, whether that is 8,000 or 10000 steps. The worked example covers nine months of one person's daily steps, 259 days logged with a goal of 8,000, a week in bed in February and a 29-day streak on a walking holiday in July. It makes a clear pedometer log and streak tracker from day one.
Light and dark editions
Every download includes a light edition and a dark edition. Every tab is restyled, not just the dashboard, and both use the same formulas. Each comes filled with a worked example and blank, in Excel and in Google Sheets.
Works with
- Microsoft Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365, on Windows and Mac, and LibreOffice
- Google Sheets with a free Google account. The Google Sheets version is a real workbook you make your own copy of, not a PDF with a link in it.
- No dynamic arrays, no macros, no add-ins and no subscription
What you download
- Light edition: the Excel workbook filled with a worked example, and a blank one
- Dark edition: the same two files in the dark design
- The instruction guide, which has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions (light and dark, filled and blank)
- The terms of use as a PDF

Frequently asked questions
Does it work in Excel and Google Sheets?
Yes. You download Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to make your own copy in Google Sheets with a free Google account.
Does it sync with my watch or phone?
No. It works with any watch, phone or pedometer because you copy three numbers a day into the Activity Log.
Can I set my own step goal?
Yes. You set the daily goal, and every day on the Step Calendar is colored against it.
How are streaks counted?
A run of days on goal is counted as you log. Missing a day, or missing logging it, starts the streak again, and both the current and longest streaks are shown.
What is the difference between the light and dark editions?
Only the look. Both have the same tabs and formulas, and both are included in every download.
