About this template
This year at a glance planner puts the whole year on one page, with the days that do not exist greyed out and every weekend already shaded. It is for families, teachers and anyone who needs birthdays, holidays, term dates and deadlines in view against each other.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
Thirty-one rows, twelve columns, one page
The Year at a Glance tab is a 12 month planner laid out as 31 rows by 12 months. Birthdays, holidays, term dates and deadlines all go in one place where you can see them against everything else, which makes it a birthday calendar and an academic planner at the same time.
It knows which days exist
30 February and 31 April are greyed out, month by month, worked out from the year cell. A year view that leaves them blank and editable is wrong for four months of every year. This one is not.
- Days that do not exist greyed out, per month
- Weekends already shaded, and they move when the year changes
- One year cell drives all of it, including leap years
- Used days counted at the foot of each month, so a month that is filling up is visible before it is full
Goals and tasks beside it
A year view is for the things that are not this week, so the yearly planner has a place for the bigger plans too.
- Goals with progress
- 250 tasks
- A dashboard reading all of it
The six connected tabs are Start Here, Setup, Year at a Glance, Goals, Tasks and Dashboard, so this annual planner keeps the long view and the to-do list together. The Start Here tab walks you through setup in a few minutes.
Works with
- Microsoft Excel 2016 or later, on Windows or Mac
- Google Sheets with a free Google account. The Google Sheets version is a real workbook you take a copy of, not a PDF with a link in it.
- No dynamic arrays, no macros and no add-ins, so it behaves the same on Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365 and in LibreOffice. No Microsoft 365 subscription is required.
- No subscription

Frequently asked questions
Does it work in Excel or Google Sheets?
Both. The Excel files run on Excel 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to make your own copy of the Google Sheets versions.
Does it work for any year?
Yes. One year cell drives the page. Change it and the weekends, the greyed-out days and leap years all follow.
Why are some days greyed out?
Days that do not exist in that month, such as 30 February and 31 April, are greyed so nothing gets written on a date that is not real.
Can I see how busy a month is?
Yes. Used days are counted at the foot of each month.
Can I use it for a school year?
You can enter term dates, holidays and deadlines on the grid, and Goals and Tasks tabs sit beside it.
