About this template
This email newsletter tracker is for writers and small businesses who send regularly and want to know what gets opened. You log one row per issue with the numbers from your email platform, and the open rate, click rate and unsubscribe rate are worked out on every row.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
The dashboard
Choose any topic, or all of them, and the page follows. Nothing is typed on it.
- Open rate for the topic picked, against all your issues
- Open and click rate month by month
- The subject lines opened most, with their click rate
- Open rate by topic, and the last 30 issues against your average
- Your subscribers now, and how far along your goal you are
- New subscribers in and everyone who left, each month
- Sent, opened, clicked and unsubscribed in one view
Subject lines, ranked
The Subject Lines tab ranks every subject line you have sent and shows the ones opened most and least, with open and click rates. It also checks what the good ones have in common: subject lines with a number, written as a question, or kept short, each set against your own open rate, and short against long.
Every rate done for you
Open rate, click rate, clicks per open and unsubscribe rate are worked out on every issue and by topic, so the file doubles as an open rate tracker for your email marketing.
Email list growth
The List Growth tab adds up new subscribers in, and unsubscribes and bounces out, month by month against your subscriber goal.
Six connected tabs
Start Here, Setup, Issues, Subject Lines, List Growth and Dashboard. Each issue row holds the subject line, topic, number sent, opens, clicks and unsubscribes, which makes it a simple newsletter planner too.
Light and dark editions
Every download includes a light edition and a dark edition. Every tab is restyled, not only the dashboard, and both run on the same formulas, so you simply pick the look you prefer. Each edition comes filled with a worked example and as a blank copy, in Excel and in Google Sheets.
Works with
- Microsoft Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365, on Windows and Mac, and LibreOffice
- Google Sheets with a free Google account. The Google Sheets version is a real workbook you take a copy of, not a PDF with a link in it.
- No dynamic arrays, no macros, no add-ins and no subscription
What you download
- Light edition: the Excel workbook filled with a worked example (50 issues of a weekly gardening newsletter), and a blank one
- Dark edition: the same two files in the dark design
- The instruction guide, which has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions (light and dark, filled and blank)
- The terms of use as a PDF
Your files are ready to download as soon as payment clears. They are for personal and business use on your own devices, so please do not share or resell them. Questions before or after you buy? Use our contact page and we will help.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with Excel and Google Sheets?
Yes. You get Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to copy the Google Sheets versions with a free Google account.
Does it connect to my email platform?
No. You type the number sent, opens, clicks and unsubscribes from your platform for each issue, and the rates are worked out for you.
What does it tell me about my subject lines?
It ranks every subject line by opens, and compares lines with a number, lines written as a question, and short against long, each against your own average.
Can I track list growth?
Yes. The List Growth tab adds new subscribers, unsubscribes and bounces month by month against your goal.
What is the difference between the light and dark editions?
Only the look. Every tab is restyled, the formulas are the same, and both come with every download.
