About this template
This SEO keyword tracker is for small business owners and bloggers who check their Google ranking once a month. List the searches you want to be found for, then type where each one ranks, and the file shows the latest position, the change since the last check, the best it has been and whether it is on page 1.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
The dashboard
Pick any keyword group and the page follows. It fills itself from your checks.
- Keywords on page 1 now, and at the first check
- Top 3, the rest of page 1 and page 2, check by check
- A shaded rank map of your biggest keywords, one position per check
- Keywords just past page 1, biggest searches first
- Which target pages bring the searches on page 1
- Keywords that moved down, the biggest moves up and down, and where everything ranks from the top 3 to outside the top 100
- The searches your page 1 keywords get, at each check
A year of checks, colored
The Keywords tab holds each keyword with its target page and how many people search for it, which is where your keyword research lands. Rank History has a column for each month's check: dark green is the top 3, green is page 1 and amber is page 2. Every keyword shows the change since the last check, since the first check, and its best position.
What moved
The Movers tab lists the biggest climbs and drops since the last check, and every keyword that came onto page 1 or fell off it. Keywords almost on page 1 are listed with the biggest searches first: the ones most worth working on.
Page by page
Every page on your site appears with the keywords it ranks for, how many are on page 1 and its best position, which keeps your website seo work tied to real pages.
Six connected tabs
Start Here, Setup, Keywords, Rank History, Movers and Dashboard. Think of it as a simple rank tracker in a seo spreadsheet you own.
Light and dark editions
Every download includes a light edition and a dark edition. Every tab is restyled, not only the dashboard, and both run on the same formulas, so you simply pick the look you prefer. Each edition comes filled with a worked example and as a blank copy, in Excel and in Google Sheets.
Works with
- Microsoft Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365, on Windows and Mac, and LibreOffice
- Google Sheets with a free Google account. The Google Sheets version is a real workbook you take a copy of, not a PDF with a link in it.
- No dynamic arrays, no macros, no add-ins and no subscription
What you download
- Light edition: the Excel workbook filled with a worked example (42 keywords and a year of monthly checks for a roofing company), and a blank one
- Dark edition: the same two files in the dark design
- The instruction guide, which has one-click links to the Google Sheets versions (light and dark, filled and blank)
- The terms of use as a PDF
Your files are ready to download as soon as payment clears. They are for personal and business use on your own devices, so please do not share or resell them. Questions before or after you buy? Use our contact page and we will help.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use it in Google Sheets instead of Excel?
Yes. The download includes Excel workbooks for Excel 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to copy the Google Sheets versions with a free Google account.
Does it check my rankings automatically?
No. Once a month you type where each keyword ranks, and the file works out the change, the best position and whether it is on page 1.
How are the positions colored?
Dark green marks the top 3, green the rest of page 1 and amber page 2, so a year of checks reads at a glance.
Which keywords should I work on first?
The file lists keywords just past page 1 with the biggest searches first, which are the ones most worth working on.
What is the difference between the light and dark editions?
Only the look. Both have every tab restyled with the same formulas, and both come with every download.
