About this template
This bookkeeping file is set up for a handyman business from the first tab, with income and expense lines that describe real handyman work. It is for self employed handymen and small home services firms who want to see whether hourly jobs or fixed-price quotes pay better, and keep invoices and mileage in order.
Please read: This is a tracker tool only, not financial, tax, legal, medical or any other professional advice or advisory service. It records and calculates what you enter; you are solely responsible for checking all figures, rates, dates and results and for every decision you make. By purchasing, downloading or using it, you accept these terms (your statutory consumer rights are not affected).
Categories for handyman work
Generic ledgers open on product sales and service income. This handyman spreadsheet uses lines that match the job, chosen from dropdowns so a year of entries adds up cleanly.
- Income: Hourly work, Fixed-price jobs, Assembly and fitting, and Materials resold
- Expenses: Materials, Tools, Waste disposal, Workwear and PPE, and more
Hourly and fixed-price, kept apart
Hourly work and fixed-price work are two different businesses in the same overalls. One is capped by the hours in the day and the other by the quote, and only the second can be improved by working smarter. Keeping them on separate lines shows which one is carrying the year.
Invoices and mileage
- Invoices: an invoice tracker for invoices raised, sent, paid and overdue
- Mileage: a mileage log with a reason on each trip from a dropdown, such as job, merchant, tip or quote visit, and the year totaled
The rest of the ledger
- Income and Expenses: 500 rows each
- Monthly and Quarterly: the totals tax is filed on
- Profit and Loss: built from the same two lists
- Clients: 10 client records with what each has been worth
- Balances and Dashboard: what the business holds, and the whole picture
- Start Here and Setup: setup in a few minutes
A bookkeeping spreadsheet, not an accountant. Tax rates and what you can claim are yours to set and yours to check.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Excel, or can I use Google Sheets?
Either. The download has Excel files for Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, and the instruction guide has one-click links to copy the Google Sheets versions with a free Google account.
Can I compare hourly work with fixed-price jobs?
Yes. Hourly work and Fixed-price jobs are separate income lines, so you can see what each earns over the year.
Does it track invoices?
Yes. The Invoices tab follows each invoice as raised, sent, paid or overdue.
Is there an estimated tax tab?
No. This file has monthly and quarterly totals and a profit and loss, but no estimated tax tab. Tax rates and what you can claim are yours to check.
How many entries does it hold?
500 income rows and 500 expense rows, plus 10 client records.
